Doug and Christina met during homeroom, the first period of the first day of their freshman year of high school in 2001. When everyone was asked to tell the class how they spent their summer, a boy in the back of the room volunteered, “I taught myself how to speak Chinese.” Just as Christina (the consummate jock) was thinking to herself what a nerdy way that was to spend one’s summer, another boy piped up from the front row. “Me too bro. Let’s talk sometime.” The class lost it, laughing. Christina turned and smiled at Doug for the first time. (Doug will deny this ever happened, but it did… and Christina thought that 14-year-old blonde boy was the coolest thing she’d ever seen.)
So Doug went off to Penn State and Christina to Georgetown. They maintained their long-distance relationship for all four years of college, talking on the phone every day (at risk of brain tumors…sorry moms), traveling back and forth to each other and even playing online scrabble. When they graduated, Doug and Christina each found jobs in DC. They still live there today with their dog Mooch.
